What Should You Do First in Elden Ring? A Limgrave Starting Route

A useful first route in Elden Ring is Church of Elleh, Gatefront, then back to Elleh after obtaining Torrent. It introduces shopping, crafting, the regional map, equipment customization and Spirit Ashes without requiring you to defeat every enemy along the way.

This is a suggested route through early Limgrave, not a mandatory order or a speedrun. You can explore side paths and return to difficult encounters later.

1. Reach the Church of Elleh

After entering Limgrave, head toward the ruined church near the opening area. You do not have to defeat the mounted Tree Sentinel to begin exploring. Giving a strong field enemy space is a sensible early choice.

At the Church of Elleh, activate the Site of Grace and speak to Merchant Kalé. His Crafting Kit enables item crafting when you have the required recipes and materials. The nearby smithing table introduces weapon reinforcement.

Do not buy everything simply because a merchant offers it. Start with tools and supplies that support your immediate route, and read item descriptions before spending limited runes.

2. Approach Gatefront and rest at its Grace

Follow the road toward Gatefront Ruins. Resting at the Gatefront Site of Grace is a reliable early step toward meeting Melina. Accepting her accord provides access to leveling and the Spectral Steed Whistle used to summon Torrent.

Do not treat “the third Grace” as a universal trigger independent of location and progress. Use this named stop, rest rather than merely activate it, and follow the dialogue that appears.

Gatefront’s soldiers can overwhelm a new character if fought as a group. The horn-bearing soldier can alert others. Approach cautiously, draw out individuals when possible, or focus on collecting what you need rather than clearing the entire camp in one attempt.

3. Collect the map and inspect the equipment

The map fragment at Gatefront’s roadside monument reveals the area’s detailed map. It is a navigational tool, not a reward for killing every soldier.

The ruins also contain two carriage chests with the Flail and Lordsworn’s Greatsword. The cellar contains the Whetstone Knife and Storm Stomp. These introduce equipment choices and Ash-of-War customization.

Check requirements before switching weapons. Finding a greatsword does not make it automatically better for a character unable to use it effectively, and collecting these items does not reduce the game’s difficulty by a measurable fixed percentage.

4. Return to Elleh at night for the Spirit Calling Bell

After obtaining Torrent, return to the Church of Elleh at night and look for Renna. The Spirit Calling Bell reference identifies this encounter as the early source of the bell and Lone Wolf Ashes.

If you miss the encounter, the bell is also available from the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold. Missing that early conversation does not permanently remove access to Spirit Ashes.

The bell is only part of the system. Spirit Ashes require the relevant resources and an eligible area, indicated by the rebirth-monument icon. An NPC summon sign and a Spirit Ash are different systems; neither is a guarantee of victory.

5. Improve what you are already using

Before repeatedly challenging a major boss, inspect your weapon’s requirements, upgrades, load and consumables. Bandai Namco’s official starting tips emphasize upgrading weapons and spirits as part of character preparation.

More health can give you room to learn, but you do not need to rush every build to a single Vigor number before exploring. Allocate levels around survivability and the equipment you actually intend to use. A requirement you cannot meet is a concrete reason to adjust; an unsupported promise of an unbeatable build is not.

6. Use Torrent carefully

Torrent makes moving between these stops easier. Its double jump does not make cliffs safe: the fall-damage reference explains that the second jump does not erase the distance already fallen. Use established paths and appropriate Spiritspring routes rather than attempting a last-second jump to cancel a fatal drop.

Before heading farther north

• You have activated useful Sites of Grace and obtained the regional map fragment.
• You know how to summon Torrent and where to check your leveling options.
• You have inspected the Gatefront equipment and chosen a weapon you can use.
• You have sought the Spirit Calling Bell or know its fallback source.
• You have considered upgrades and nearby exploration before forcing a difficult boss attempt.

These are practical milestones, not prerequisites for enjoying the game. If the next encounter is too demanding, use the map and return route you have established to explore another part of Limgrave.
