Why Positioning Matters in Monster Train 2: Floors, Units, and Deckbuilding

A powerful card in Monster Train 2 still needs somewhere useful to go. Its three-floor battlefield makes a deck’s strength depend on deployment, protection, and the order in which enemies meet your defenses. That does not make card quality irrelevant; it makes positioning part of evaluating the card in the first place. This is a source-based strategy overview.

Three floors create choices, not an obligation to fill all three

Enemies advance toward the Pyre through a vertically arranged battlefield. A lower-floor defense can engage them earlier; an upper-floor defense gives another opportunity to stop survivors. The right arrangement depends on your units, their capacity requirements, and the threats in the current battle.

Spreading units everywhere is not automatically safer. A thinly defended floor may fail to protect a valuable damage dealer, while concentrating compatible units can create a much stronger fighting group. Conversely, a concentrated plan needs an answer for enemies it cannot remove. The useful question is not ‘Have I occupied every floor?’ but ‘What happens to the enemies this floor lets through?’

Read a unit as part of a formation

A damage number says little about whether a unit survives long enough to use it. Before committing a unit, consider what stands in front of it, what support it needs, and how much space remains for the rest of the plan. A card that appears weaker in isolation can be more useful if it makes an existing formation function.

These are planning principles, not a fixed opening sequence. They also explain why a bad deployment cannot always be repaired by drawing a stronger card later: the limitation may be the board state rather than the deck’s maximum damage.

Room cards and Equipment connect drafting to placement

The official Steam description identifies Room cards, which affect a floor, and Equipment cards, which equip units. These introduce two different scales of investment. A Room encourages thinking about the group using that space; Equipment focuses attention on the unit carrying it.

When drafting, ask which part of the existing plan a new card improves. Does it strengthen the floor doing most of the work, protect an important unit, or cover a weakness? Adding another attractive effect can dilute a deck if it does not help execute the intended strategy.

Replayability comes from changing the problem

The base game introduced five new clans, alongside Pyre Hearts and additional modes and challenges. When comparing editions, distinguish those base-game options from expansion content; the clan count alone does not tell you which combinations an edition includes.

For a useful post-battle review, identify the first failure in the plan: insufficient damage, a lost frontline, an unsuitable floor, or support drawn too late. That diagnosis is more actionable than deciding that every loss requires rarer cards. Monster Train 2’s appeal is the connection between deck construction and a battlefield where the same card can have very different value depending on its neighbors.
