PRAGMATA — What Makes Hacking and Shooting Work Together?

PRAGMATA‘s defining idea is not simply that Hugh carries a gun while Diana can hack machines. It is that their abilities make one combat problem out of movement, puzzle-solving and shooting. Capcom’s released single-player action-adventure places the pair in a lunar research station, where those roles have to work together.
This article uses Capcom’s gameplay explanation to examine what makes that combination interesting. It does not claim a completed playthrough or judge the ending.
The green goal and the blue detour
Enemy bots have reinforced armour. The documented hacking action involves moving a cursor along a continuous path to the green goal node, disabling their defenses. Once an enemy is exposed, shooting its weak point deals increased damage.
Blue nodes have a different role: passing through them strengthens the hack, including its damage effect and duration. Capcom explicitly says you do not have to collect every blue tile. This distinction creates a meaningful choice between completing a useful route quickly and attempting a more rewarding one.
A longer route is therefore not automatically a better decision. Its value depends on the combat situation. The design succeeds conceptually when the player can recognize an opportunity without forgetting the threat around Hugh.

Variation needs consequences, not just more squares
Capcom describes yellow Hacking Nodes that add special effects, such as lowering defenses or hacking multiple targets. More weapons and nodes unlock as the game progresses. These give the system room to vary what a successful route accomplishes, rather than merely making the same puzzle longer.
The weapon rules add another layer. Hugh can equip four weapon types, while powerful weapons break after their ammunition is exhausted. His default weapon instead gradually replenishes ammunition. Matching a limited weapon’s use to a valuable opening is a more specific decision than firing whichever gun looks strongest.
Teamwork outside combat
Hugh’s suit thrusters support hovering and dashing, with a gauge that limits their use. Diana can hack station security, and the official page distinguishes those environmental puzzles from combat hacks. Unlockable Escape Hatches connect exploration with returns to the Shelter.
That arrangement gives each character a role beyond dialogue. The analytical question is whether the game uses those abilities to make exploration legible and varied, rather than interrupting it with unrelated puzzles. The documented features establish the tools; judging their pacing throughout the campaign requires a fuller playthrough assessment.
What to look for in the demo
Capcom offers the PRAGMATA Sketchbook demo. It is a more useful starting point for personal fit than an unsupported claim that the combat is universally addictive.
- Can you tell which node ends the hack and which nodes improve it?
- Does switching attention between the panel and Hugh’s surroundings feel engaging?
- Does an exposed weak point give you a clear reason to change weapon or timing?
- Do the controls and text remain readable on your intended display?
The strongest version of this idea makes hacking change how you shoot, and shooting change how much risk you accept while hacking. That interdependence is the system’s real promise.
