Hell Is Us — The Tension of Finding Your Own Way

Hell Is Us turns finding your way into part of the adventure. Rogue Factor’s third-person action game follows Rémi into a country damaged by civil war and a supernatural calamity, as he searches for his missing parents. It is already released: the PlayStation listing records September 4, 2025 for PS5.
The useful uncertainty is therefore about how its approach to exploration will suit you, not whether the game will eventually launch. This article is a source-based examination of that approach, not a firsthand review.
A semi-open world with a different emphasis
The official description calls the world semi-open. That is a more precise expectation than imagining an unrestricted continent where every direction is equally available. The design emphasizes finding routes and answers through the environment instead of following a conventional chain of objective markers.
Publisher copy uses the slogan “no map, no compass, no quest markers.” The practical takeaway here is the reduced emphasis on automatic directional guidance. That slogan alone should not be stretched into a guarantee that the game contains no informational tools, reminders or navigational assistance of any kind.

Discovery and confusion are not the same achievement
Removing a marker changes the information a player must seek. Dialogue, landmarks and environmental relationships become more important because you cannot rely on an icon to make every connection for you. That can give a discovered route a stronger sense of ownership.
But an absence of markers does not automatically make exploration good. A useful clue should help you form a hypothesis, and the next observation should let you test it. If you cannot tell what information you lack, getting lost can become repetition rather than discovery. This is a criterion for judging the design, not a claim that every area succeeds or fails it.
The drone belongs in the combat discussion
The official features identify specially forged swords, spears and axes as tools against creatures that modern weapons cannot defeat. They also describe the drone as an ally to use wisely in combat. That supports a partnership between melee fighting and drone use, but not the claim that it supplies a conventional scouting map or automatically directs you through the world.
Combat and exploration place different demands on attention. A route can be understood through observation while an encounter still asks you to learn enemy behaviour. Neither system should be reduced to the vague assertion that every step is a gamble.
How to judge whether the approach suits you
- Look for unedited exploration footage, including moments when the player has to decide where to go.
- Ask whether remembering conversations and landmarks sounds engaging or tiring.
- When playing, distinguish a location you have not reached from a clue you have not understood.
- Check the current game’s available guidance and settings rather than interpreting a marketing slogan literally.
Hell Is Us‘s promise is an adventure in which attention does more of the navigational work. Whether that creates satisfying tension depends on the clarity of its clues and your appetite for finding connections yourself.
