Look Outside: Why an Apartment Makes Such an Effective Horror Setting

A window normally connects a home to the world. Look Outside turns it into a threat: a mysterious event transforms people who look outside into grotesque creatures. The survival horror RPG, developed by Francis Coulombe and published by Devolver Digital, was released on March 21, 2025. Its strongest design idea is the contrast between a recognisable home and a building that has become dangerous to explore.
This is a source-based examination of that design, rather than a report of a completed playthrough.

Home is part of the survival loop
The official description sets out a cycle of expeditions and recovery. You leave the apartment to find food, supplies and weapons, then return to cook, craft tools, play games and spend time with neighbours who have become allies. Those domestic activities matter to the premise: surviving is about maintaining a life, not simply keeping a weapon loaded.
That creates a useful tension for the player. An unexplored corridor might contain supplies or answers, but reaching it means leaving the place where recovery happens. The apartment gives an expedition a destination on the way back, as well as a starting point. A successful trip need not mean exploring every room in one visit.
Turn-based does not mean consequence-free
The official Steam description confirms that combat takes distance between combatants into account and uses makeshift weapons and items scavenged from the building. It advertises more than 150 hand-crafted creatures. That is a publisher-described roster figure, not a count independently completed for this article.
The interesting connection is between space and scarcity. A turn gives you time to consider your options, but it does not remove the consequences of using a limited resource. When choosing equipment, consider how it helps at different distances and what you will have left for the return journey. This is a planning-oriented form of horror, even though its imagery is often extremely physical.
It would be misleading to describe the game as horror without gore. The publisher explicitly identifies body horror, frequent violence and gore. The domestic setting supplements those elements; it does not replace them.
The neighbours complicate the threat
Some characters can be recruited or offered shelter. That gives encounters a second possible meaning: a strange figure may become part of the household rather than simply an obstacle. The contrast between grotesque appearances and potential companionship is more interesting than a blanket rule that everything outside the apartment must be killed.
The store also confirms multiple endings. For a first run, read conversations and treat unfamiliar characters as questions worth investigating before deciding how to respond. An exhaustive ending guide is best saved for a later, spoiler-heavy search.
Who is likely to appreciate it?
Look Outside is worth considering if you enjoy turn-based decisions, scavenging and unsettling character encounters. Its appeal is less dependent on rapid aiming than on deciding what to risk and when to retreat. Players uncomfortable with explicit body horror should look carefully at the store’s content description before buying.
The compelling idea is not simply that home becomes frightening. It is that home remains valuable while the surrounding world becomes difficult to understand. Cooking a meal or welcoming an ally can therefore sit beside a monstrous encounter without feeling like a different game.
