Nine Sols on Story Mode: Would the Combat Still Feel Rewarding? | Parrying, Damage Settings, Boss Fights

Nine Sols’ Story Mode can leave room to learn its combat while reducing the punishment for mistakes. Whether that feels rewarding depends on what you want to practice: surviving a long fight, recognizing attacks, or executing a shorter sequence cleanly. Lower damage received does not by itself erase timing, and higher damage dealt does not automatically make every mechanic irrelevant.

What the two multipliers change
Story Mode has separate controls for damage dealt and damage received. The community Game Modes reference documents the following defaults and ranges.
| Setting | Default | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Attack Damage Multiplier | 150% | 100–1000% |
| Injury Multiplier | 25% | 1–100% |
Increasing the attack multiplier generally shortens the damage requirement. Lowering the injury multiplier gives more room for mistakes. Those changes can feel different even if both make progress easier: one reduces how long an encounter lasts, while the other lets you remain in it longer to observe.
Use the settings to support a specific goal
If you want more time to learn an enemy’s patterns, try reducing incoming damage before greatly increasing outgoing damage. If the obstacle is sustaining attention through a long fight, increasing your damage may be more relevant. These are learning strategies, not tested optimal values for every boss.
Parrying remains a defining part of Nine Sols, but it is inaccurate to say that damage is impossible without it or that every red attack has one identical counter. Learn the response to the particular attack rather than treating its color as a complete instruction. Story Mode changes the cost of experimentation; it does not supply all of those answers.

Check the one-way switch before changing a save
The community-maintained Game Modes reference documents a switch from Standard to Story Mode, but not a switch back on the same playthrough. That makes the decision worth considering if a Standard completion matters to you.
The official Steam achievement list specifically requires Standard Mode for Fight Through Hardship. Do not turn that requirement into a blanket claim that Story Mode blocks every achievement. The mode reference also describes Battle Memories for revisiting boss encounters after an ending, providing a separate reason to return to combat.
Reward does not have to mean maximum punishment
A player can find satisfaction in reading a pattern correctly even if a missed input is survivable. Another may want the pressure of Standard Mode. The settings let those goals diverge, with a clearly identified achievement tradeoff.
Choose settings according to what you want from a fight. More tolerance for mistakes can support pattern practice; greater outgoing damage can reduce an endurance barrier. Adjusting one setting at a time makes its effect easier to judge. This guide uses published documentation rather than hands-on boss tests.
