Death Stranding 2: Why Route Planning Deserves Your Attention

In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, reaching a destination involves more than choosing the shortest line. Cargo balance, vehicle charge, terrain and hostile encounters can all change the practical value of a route. That makes preparation an interesting subject in its own right, even for players attracted by the combat.
This is a planning-focused analysis of the official beginner guidance. It does not claim that the author completed the game or that every player will remember travel more vividly than battles.
A route starts with the load
PlayStation’s guide recommends optimizing cargo from the Final Preparations or Cargo Management menu. Poor balance makes falls more likely, and falls can damage deliveries. On the default PS5 controls, holding triangle performs the automatic optimization.
That is a starting point rather than a complete plan. Consider how much you are carrying and whether a vehicle is appropriate. The same guide notes that vehicles found at enemy bases or left by other porters can carry cargo, but their battery charge is limited. A route that looks convenient on a map may be less useful if your transport cannot comfortably finish it.

Information helps, but does not remove uncertainty
The Terrain Scanner helps identify hazards and can detect cargo carried by enemies. For BTs, the official advice is to watch the Odradek and the floating umbilical cords. Visibility can be difficult at night or in poor weather.
This is different from assuming the map provides a perfect, continuously updated display of every threat. Planning should leave room for observation on the ground. An intended path is a hypothesis to check as you travel.
Stealth belongs in the logistics calculation
A fight can be exciting and still be an unnecessary risk to a delivery. PlayStation’s guide recommends approaching unaware enemies from behind for a non-lethal takedown; it notes both the delivery Likes reward and the reduced chance of cargo damage.
That does not make combat irrelevant or avoidance universally superior. It means the decision has a purpose beyond eliminating enemies. Ask whether an encounter helps the delivery, blocks it, or can be bypassed with less uncertainty.
A practical departure routine
- Check the delivery and the load you intend to carry.
- Optimize cargo balance and assess the vehicle’s remaining charge.
- Consider your current APAS enhancements; the official guide says these can be reset for experimentation.
- Scan while travelling, and adjust when the terrain or enemy information changes.
- After arrival, identify one problem a different loadout or route could have prevented.
Other porters’ structures can appear and be upgraded, making shared infrastructure another resource to evaluate. That is a potential benefit, not a guarantee that a particular bridge or complete route will always be present.
The appeal of route planning is authorship: the journey reflects the choices made before and during it. The combat does not need to be forgettable for that process to deserve attention.
