Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows Worth Playing in 2026? Two Protagonists and the Updated Game

Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers two contrasting protagonists, an open-world version of feudal Japan, and a documented series of post-launch updates. This source-based buying overview asks who is likely to enjoy that combination in 2026 and where returning players can pick up the added content.

The protagonists offer different approaches
Ubisoft’s game page presents Naoe as a shinobi and Yasuke as a samurai. Their contrasting strengths give the player a reason to think about an approach before entering a situation, rather than viewing the second character as only a cosmetic alternative.
Think of the two protagonists as different approaches to prepare for, rather than an emergency swap that every encounter permits. Choose based on the task and the character currently available, then build the approach around that character’s tools.
Stealth offers tools, not an invisibility guarantee
Light, shadow, and the environment are important to the stealth premise. The useful question is how to combine cover, movement, and opportunities to avoid detection—not whether standing in darkness makes detection categorically impossible.
The seasonal presentation also contributes to the appeal of exploring the setting. It is reasonable to be drawn to that atmosphere while remaining less interested in a large open-world activity structure. Visual appeal and enthusiasm for the campaign’s scale are separate buying considerations.

What the update record establishes
- December 2, 2025: the Nintendo Switch 2 version launched. Ubisoft’s launch notice already listed New Game+ among its features, so neither should be presented as first arriving in spring or mid-2026.
- February 17, 2026: Title Update 1.1.8 added manual jump through the Advanced Parkour option, expanded the statistics page, and included fixes such as perk corrections.
- June 16, 2026: Ubisoft released 1.1.11, described as the final major update. Its additions included the Black Tides concluding quest, replayable Domains, and a Horizon Rift.
The 1.1.8 notes and final major update announcement document real changes. They do not prove that every technical issue has been eliminated on every platform. ‘Final major update’ should also not be inflated into a claim that no smaller fix could ever follow.
Where returning players can start
To access Black Tides, Ubisoft says you must finish the main story and the post-launch quests A Critical Encounter and A Puzzlement. Claws of Awaji is not required. Domains can be found through the Objective Board, with the introduction in Yamato intended for level 30 or above. These are different return points: one closes the story, while the other tests equipment builds against changing challenge modifiers.
A buying decision based on the game now
Shadows is most worth considering if the combination of Naoe’s stealth-oriented approach, Yasuke’s combat emphasis, and extended exploration of the setting matches what you want. New Game+ and replayable content strengthen the case for returning players, but additional activities do not solve a basic dislike of the open-world format.
For technical expectations, seek recent evidence for the specific hardware you intend to use. The update history supports saying the game has received substantial post-launch work; it does not support a blanket ‘fully fixed’ verdict. Evaluate the shipped features alongside the current price for your platform.
