Lost Soul Aside: Stylish Combat and the Limits of Spectacle

Lost Soul Aside puts spectacular weapon combat at the center of its appeal. The fair critical question is not whether spectacle counts as gameplay—it does—but whether the encounters, pacing and story give that combat enough variety and context.
This article combines the official feature description with attributed criticism from RPG Site’s September 2025 review. It is not a hands-on review by this publication, and the review’s launch-period observations are not a test of every later patch.
Start with the actual weapons
PlayStation lists four weapon types: Sword, Greatsword, Poleblade and Scythe. Each has a different role in the official combat overview.
- Sword: the balanced starting option, with close- and mid-range combat and aerial attacks.
- Greatsword: a slower, heavier option that also supports blocking and parrying.
- Poleblade: emphasizes mobility and aerial control.
- Scythe: emphasizes speed and repositioning.
The official description supports switching weapons during combat and combining different ranges and impacts. That establishes a toolset; it does not establish measured input latency or parity with Devil May Cry 5’s depth.

Combat depth and combat flow are different questions
RPG Site reviewer Scott White identified combat as the part he enjoyed most, while finding weapon swapping insufficiently smooth for his preferred combo flow. He also criticized the visibility of a Burst-attack cue amid the effects.
Those are useful observations because they connect criticism to an interaction: having several weapons is not the same as making their transitions easy to read and use. They remain one reviewer’s assessment of the PS5 version, rather than a universal finding about responsiveness.
Repetition can limit a strong toolset
The same review describes repeated movement between combat arenas and a recurring pattern of visiting locations and alternate dimensions. White found that repetition tiring despite the visual variety.
That supports a narrower argument than “style defeats gameplay.” A combat system can offer expressive choices while the surrounding encounters fail to motivate enough different uses of them. The issue is the relationship between tools and situations, not the absence of gameplay substance altogether.
Story needs time with its characters
The official premise follows Kaser as he tries to recover his sister’s soul after an attack by the Voidrax. White’s criticism was that major story moments lacked enough setup and character interaction to feel earned.
It is reasonable to use that as a consideration for narrative-focused players. Players who value character development can use that concern to look for fuller discussion of how the campaign builds its relationships.
A grounded way to decide
Combat-focused players should examine how switching, defensive cues and repeated encounters feel to them. Narrative-focused players should look for discussion of character development, not only the premise. The official page lists a demo, which offers a more useful first step than treating a fixed campaign length or an old price as a universal value calculation.
RPG Site also reported crashes and presentation issues in its tested version. Those reports should be attributed and dated; current technical quality needs current evidence. The lasting question is whether the combat’s appeal outweighs the repetition and story concerns for your preferences.
