Ninja Gaiden 4: What Its Combat Systems Offer Action-First Players

Ninja Gaiden 4 is easiest to explain through the decisions inside a fight: when to change form, how to exploit a stagger, and which execution opportunity is available. Its appeal to action-focused players lies in connecting those decisions into a sequence they can control and improve.
This is a source-based breakdown of the official combat systems and replay options.

Changing form changes the available answer
Team NINJA’s systems page distinguishes Yakumo’s Bloodraven Form from Ryu’s Gleam State. Their powerful attacks consume gauge resources and can break an enemy’s guard or stagger it during a Power Attack.
For Yakumo, the form change also transforms the weapon’s role. Takeminakata uses quick twin-blade attacks in Base Form and longer-range Tachi attacks in Bloodraven Form. Yatousen changes from rapier to lance, while Magatsuhi changes from staff to an area-attacking hammer. Kage-Hiruko combines assassin’s tools with a mechanical-arm form.
These are more useful distinctions than a generic list of five interchangeable weapon categories. Ryu’s Dragon Sword belongs to his own toolkit. A player needs to understand which character and form a technique belongs to before planning a sequence around it.
Not every finisher has the same condition
- Obliteration Technique
- A heavy attack on a dismembered enemy triggers the execution described by the official page.
- Ultimate Technique
- In Base Form, charging and releasing a heavy attack produces a powerful technique with brief invulnerability.
- Fatal Flash
- Anticipating an enemy attack triggers a parry and swift counterattack.
- Bloodbath Kill
- In Berserk State, certain Bloodraven attacks trigger this execution.
- Bloodbath Slaughter
- A separate Berserk-state action executes enemies within its attack range.
The tactical point is eligibility. Dismemberment, charging, anticipating an attack and entering a particular state are different preparations. Describing all of them as a full meter that automatically starts a cinematic removes the decisions the player must actually make.
A useful learning order
Begin by distinguishing Base Form from the resource-consuming form. Then identify one reliable way to create stagger and recognise a dismembered target. Finally, add techniques that depend on more specific states or timing. This is a suggested learning method, not a tested optimal combo route.
Treat Fatal Flash as one part of the defensive toolkit. Practice its counter timing alongside the other defensive actions available to the current character, rather than trying to force every incoming attack into the same response.
There is a reason to return after the story
The official page says completing the story unlocks Chapter Select, allowing chapters to be played as either Yakumo or Ryu. It also unlocks Trials, including boss encounters and battles with special conditions. For players who enjoy improving execution, that structure may matter more than a one-time campaign clear.
Difficulty settings range from assisted Hero mode to Master Ninja. That confirms options for different players; it does not prove that every newcomer will find the game easy or that the highest setting is fair in every encounter.
What this tells a prospective player
The combat offers several interacting forms of preparation and payoff. If that is what you enjoy, the documented toolkit gives you a specific reason to look closer. If story, traversal and level variety are equally important, consult complete reviews rather than assuming combat complexity guarantees the whole package.
Before buying, decide how much of the appeal lies in mastering combat. Chapter Select and Trials provide a reason to revisit encounters, while players who prioritize story or level variety should assess those aspects separately from the depth of the fighting system.
