Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Issen and the Tactical Value of Defence

A sword fight becomes tactical when the next input depends on more than how quickly you can attack. Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a useful example through Issen, defensive timing and enemy stamina. Capcom’s demo manual documents different routes to a powerful strike, including a choice between damage and soul rewards during a boss Break Issen.

This guide explains combat systems described in Capcom’s demo manual. Its scope is the demo’s mechanics, rather than a full-game balance assessment.

Issen and Break Issen are different routes

Capcom’s official Issen manual describes an Issen triggered by attacking just before being hit. It is a counterattack with significant damage, not a promise that every opponent, including bosses, dies in one blow.

Break Issen follows a different condition. Attacks and deflects reduce the enemy’s Stamina Gauge; exhausting that gauge opens the enemy to the move. If several exhausted enemies are present, a Break Issen combo can carry the attack to another eligible target.

The distinction matters when learning a fight. One approach asks you to identify an immediate counter window. The other asks you to build toward exhaustion. Failing to land the first does not mean the second has disappeared, and the manual does not say that every failed Issen automatically becomes a safe block.

Do not treat deflecting as projectile-only

Rock Paper Shotgun’s combat guide distinguishes parrying from deflecting and discusses deflection as a way to deplete enemy stamina as well as deal with archers. That supports the official manual’s link between deflects and Break Issen.

Reducing the system to ‘parry melee attacks, deflect arrows’ therefore loses an important connection. Learn what the specific defensive action contributes, then decide whether your immediate goal is surviving the exchange, creating position or pushing the enemy toward exhaustion.

Check the control scheme for your platform while learning each defensive action. First practice recognizing its effect on enemy stamina, then work on the timing that creates a finishing opportunity.

The boss choice is marked by effect

During a boss Break Issen, the manual says you can choose a target area. Red symbols indicate extra damage; purple symbols indicate plentiful soul generation. Those colours describe the available effect. They should not be confused with the colours of souls themselves.

You may value damage now or a larger soul reward. Read the symbol shown for that encounter rather than assuming the same body part always offers the same reward.

What to practise first

  1. Identify the enemy’s attack movement before attempting a last-moment counter.
  2. Watch the Stamina Gauge to understand how attacks and deflects contribute to exhaustion.
  3. Recognise the Break Issen opportunity instead of continuing an ordinary combo without looking.
  4. On bosses, choose the displayed reward deliberately.

This progression separates observation from reward. It also avoids assuming that the most precise technique must be used against every attack. A successful defence can be useful because of the next decision it enables.

A narrower, stronger claim

The demo’s documented systems reward reading an opponent in more than one way. Immediate timing can create an Issen; sustained stamina pressure can create a Break Issen. On a boss, the opening still leaves a choice about which reward to pursue. That is the tactical appeal: a successful defense changes what you can do next.
