PRAGMATA Combat Explained: Hacking, Shooting and Divided Attention

PRAGMATA combines shooting with a second task that competes for your attention: guiding a route through a hacking grid while enemies remain a threat. Understanding that relationship is more useful than treating it as an ordinary shooter with an occasional puzzle break.

This explanation is based on Capcom’s gameplay guide, rather than claimed personal playtime. The game is available now, and the official site also lists the free Sketchbook demo.

Hacking creates a better opportunity to shoot

Hugh supplies the firearms; Diana hacks the enemy’s defenses. Capcom explains that breaking through armor exposes a vulnerability that allows effective attacks. Hacking is therefore central to creating effective attack opportunities against armored enemies.

The practical sequence is to identify a target, complete the hack and make use of the opening. The puzzle is not simply a separate checkpoint before the action resumes: it is part of managing the encounter.

Read the grid as a route, not a completion checklist

A hack requires a continuous path to the green endpoint. Blue spaces increase the damage benefit and the duration of the opening. You do not have to visit every blue space to complete the route. Yellow hacking nodes add special effects.

That creates a useful distinction between completing a hack and maximizing it. A direct route can finish the task sooner; a route collecting more bonuses can make the resulting attack opportunity more valuable. The best choice depends on how much attention the surrounding fight demands, not only on how attractive the grid looks in isolation.

The main challenge is switching attention

Aiming at an enemy and planning a grid route require different kinds of focus. That is the distinctive pressure created by the system: concentrating too narrowly on either task can make the other harder to manage.

When trying the demo, first aim to understand the shortest valid routes. Once those are comfortable, experiment with extra blue spaces and node effects. This is a suggested learning approach, not a claim that one route solves every encounter. Watching the battlefield remains important even when the puzzle itself looks straightforward.

Hugh’s thrusters also draw on a gauge. Movement is therefore another resource to consider alongside hacking opportunities and ammunition, rather than a limitless way to escape every difficult situation.

Temporary firepower is not permanent weapon loss

Capcom distinguishes the default weapon, whose ammunition replenishes automatically, from more powerful weapons that break when their ammunition runs out. This gives limited-ammunition weapons a different role from the dependable fallback.

Treat the current weapon’s remaining ammunition as a resource for this encounter. The default weapon remains a fallback when temporary firepower runs out.

For decision-making, consider the opportunity in front of you: a strong temporary weapon is useful when its shots can exploit an opening. Saving every round without considering the current threat can be as unhelpful as spending everything before understanding the encounter.

Diana matters outside a damage calculation

Diana’s hacking also helps open doors during exploration. Escape Hatches provide travel between the station and the Shelter. These systems give the partnership a presence beyond a single combat maneuver.

Mechanically, the two characters form a coordinated set of abilities. Whether that cooperation also makes the story emotionally convincing is a different question, discussed in our analysis of Hugh and Diana’s partnership.

What the demo can tell you

Use the demo to judge whether shifting between spatial awareness and route planning feels interesting to you. Its appeal is specific: hacking changes when and how shooting is effective, making attention management part of the action.
