Split Fiction — The Design of a Shared Experience
The central idea of Split Fiction is straightforward: a co-op game should give two people reasons to pay attention to one another. Hazelight’s adventure follows Mio and Zoe through science-fiction and fantasy worlds, using changing abilities and challenges to keep that relationship active.
This is a design analysis based on EA’s published features and support information. It does not claim that we completed the game together or measured its difficulty with differently experienced players.
Coordination is part of the game
EA describes Split Fiction as a split-screen adventure tailored for two, with challenges requiring coordinated actions and timing. Its advertised activities range from platforming and puzzles to stealth, gravity bikes and a dance battle with a monkey.
The variety matters because it repeatedly changes the subject of cooperation. Rather than settling into one permanent division of labour, partners have reasons to compare what they can do and what the next obstacle asks of them. Communication becomes part of solving the situation.
That does not mean every moment requires both players to press a button simultaneously. Nor does a co-op structure erase differences in camera control, timing or confidence. It creates interdependence; whether that feels rewarding depends partly on how the partners handle it.
Shared surprise has its own value
A sudden change of setting can become a conversation because both players encounter it together. The sci-fi/fantasy contrast and playful side activities give that conversation material beyond winning a fight. This is the article’s interpretation of the feature set, not a guarantee that every joke or sequence will work for every pair.
It also explains why judging only the depth of an isolated mechanic can miss something important. A brief activity may succeed as one beat in a changing partnership without needing to support a separate full-length game. The relevant question is whether the transition gives both people something engaging to do.
Plan the session before buying two copies
EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ confirms that one owner can invite a partner to play the full game online for free. The guest installs Friend’s Pass. Cross-play is supported between PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
- Online play requires the relevant platform accounts, linked EA accounts and an internet connection. Check your platform’s online-service requirements as well.
- For offline local co-op, EA says an internet connection and EA account are not required. Use two controllers, or on PC a controller alongside keyboard and mouse.
- Two Friend’s Pass players can try the opening demo together before either buys the full game.
- Friend’s Pass progress carries over, but the FAQ says achievements or trophies require ownership of the full game.
Choose a partner, not just a platform
Agree on whether you want to explore side content, repeat a tricky sequence or prioritize moving forward. If one person learns a mechanic faster, explain what you noticed rather than taking every discovery away from the other. These are collaboration suggestions, not hidden game rules.
Split Fiction‘s shared experience is built through its gameplay. The attraction is not merely having someone nearby; it is making progress that gives both players something to contribute and remember.
