The Alters — Why Managing Another Self Is Personal

The Alters makes a management problem unusually intimate: the people Jan Dolski needs to survive are alternative versions of himself. They share an origin, but different choices have given them different memories, expertise and regrets. Recruiting help therefore also means confronting lives Jan did not live.
11 bit studios’ game was released on June 13, 2025. This article examines its documented premise and systems; it is not a firsthand account of playing or completing it.
A crew is a practical necessity
The developer’s Steam description places Jan on a hostile, radiation-soaked planet, with a mobile base too complex for one person to operate. An approaching lethal sun makes movement urgent. Advanced quantum technology and the planet’s resources allow him to create the Alters who can supply the skills he lacks.
That premise keeps the alternative selves connected to a tangible problem. They are not simply visitors appearing so that Jan can discuss philosophy. They are also the people needed to maintain a home, produce supplies and keep the mission moving.

The most efficient worker is still a person
The official description emphasizes distinct personalities and conflict over how to handle the mission. That means “which skill do I need?” is only the first question. The next is how to maintain cooperation among people whose histories and priorities differ.
This is where the idea becomes personal. Treating an Alter only as a specialist is tempting in an emergency, but the fiction gives that specialist a version of Jan’s own life. A dispute can therefore be read as both a workplace problem and a confrontation with another possible self.
That reading does not mean every Alter is a literal fragment of the protagonist’s unconscious. The game presents them as alternative people with their own biographies. Their differences deserve more attention than a list of stereotypes such as “the angry miner” or “the cold scientist.”
The base has two jobs
The base is a factory and a home. Its documented systems include upgrades, research, life support and manufacturing, while its occupants bring relationships that need attention. Those responsibilities can compete for time, but they also explain why survival and emotional storytelling belong in the same game.
Outside, resource gathering exposes Jan to radiation and anomalies. Inside, maintaining the crew is part of maintaining the capacity to survive. The more useful description is not “a survival game that is secretly about feelings,” but a survival game in which people complicate the plan.
What the premise asks of the player
- Be prepared for management and character conversations to share attention.
- Think about the consequences of a staffing decision beyond the immediate task it solves.
- Read disagreements as differences in experience, rather than assuming every objection is an arbitrary obstacle.
- Do not expect the premise to identify one universally correct version of Jan’s life.
These are interpretive suggestions, not a tested optimal strategy or a promise of a particular ending. The appeal lies in an uncomfortable question: if another version of you had made different choices, would you recognize him as a person—or only as evidence about your own life?
The Alters makes that question practical by asking the versions of Jan to share work, risk and a place to live.
