Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 — Is Single-Player Still Worth It? | Campaign, AI Teammates, Combat

Space Marine 2 supports a solo campaign, and Operations can be played privately with bots. Whether that is enough for you depends on what you want: a finite story starring Titus, or repeated PvE missions built around combat and progression. Those are different reasons to buy the same game.
This assessment uses the publisher’s mode descriptions and patch notes. It does not claim a fresh benchmark of bot performance, server reliability or the hardest difficulty.

The campaign is a legitimate solo option
Focus Entertainment describes the campaign as playable solo or in three-player co-op. It continues the story of Ultramarine Lieutenant Titus and combines ranged and melee fighting against large enemy forces.
Calling it ‘pure single-player’ would therefore be inaccurate, but you do not need two friends to make its narrative available. For a player primarily interested in the setting and spectacle, the campaign is the clearest starting point. Select a difficulty that lets you learn the combat rather than assuming AI companions will compensate for every mistake.
A finite campaign can justify a purchase for some players and not for others. Compare its role in the package with your price and expectations; a universal claim that it ‘justifies the price’ cannot account for either.
Private Operations arrived in September 2024
Patch 3.0, dated September 26, 2024, added a private Operations mode. The notes explicitly describe playing alone with bots, or with one friend, without random players joining through matchmaking.
The same patch documented bot assistance against Zoanthropes and Gargoyle objectives, fewer restrictions on finishing enemies, and fixes for getting stuck. Several changes were listed under Campaign. Use these notes to understand the history of solo support, while checking recent evidence separately if high-difficulty Operations are the main reason for your purchase.
Gun Strike is a shot, not a melee swing
The distinction between defensive openings and follow-up attacks is central to learning the combat. A Gun Strike is a contextual pistol shot activated with the fire input when the eligible red target indicator appears. It is not performed by pressing melee to swing a primary weapon. Game Rant’s Gun Strike guide explains the basic input and visual cue.
Executions are a different action. Health and armour are also different resources: contested health represents recently lost health that can be recovered under the relevant combat rules, rather than a general guarantee that health regenerates by itself. Patch 3.0 specifically changed Med Stims to restore contested health in addition to their normal healing.
Because balance changes affect recovery and weapon behaviour, avoid building a strategy around an old numerical guide without checking its version. Learn the cues first, then investigate the current details for your chosen class.
What bots can and cannot promise
Private mode solves a social requirement: you can choose to avoid matchmaking. It does not guarantee an equally comfortable experience with every loadout and difficulty. Bots and coordinated friends are different tools, and that difference becomes more important when a mission demands timing or target prioritisation.
Start Operations at a manageable difficulty, learn an objective and practise your defensive responses before raising the pressure. Judge a failed run by what caused it—positioning, unfamiliar mechanics or insufficient support—rather than treating every failure as evidence that solo play is impossible.
So, is it worth playing alone?
Yes, it is a credible choice for someone seeking a solo Warhammer campaign with optional replayable PvE. It is a less certain purchase if its value depends entirely on effortless high-difficulty farming with AI. Buy for the experience the modes actually support, not for a promise that bots will reproduce a coordinated three-person squad.
