What Should You Know Before Playing Elden Ring?

You do not need to understand every Elden Ring system before starting. Learn how resting, runes, equipment and combat resources work first. That foundation will help more than memorizing a late-game route.
This beginner guide uses Bandai Namco’s published guidance and selected reference pages. It covers the base game’s opening systems and avoids major story spoilers.
Sites of Grace are your reset points
As explained in the official starter guide, resting at a Site of Grace restores your resources and brings back many enemies. A rest is therefore both a recovery tool and a reset of ordinary encounters nearby.
When you die, the runes you were carrying are left at a recovery point. Dying again before collecting them loses that previous pile. Spend runes on a useful level, upgrade or purchase when convenient rather than carrying a large amount into an encounter you have not learned.
Grace also offers direction, but it is not the only way the game communicates. NPC conversations, item descriptions, landmarks and the environment provide useful information. Do not assume that resting at another Grace automatically advances every quest.
Health, stamina and FP do different jobs
- HP determines how much damage you can take before dying.
- Stamina supports actions such as attacking, blocking and dodging. Leaving a little available can matter more than landing one extra hit.
- FP is used by spells and many skills. The Flask of Cerulean Tears restores FP; the Flask of Crimson Tears restores HP.
Intelligence and Faith are attributes, not expendable spell fuel. Spells have requirements, and their performance depends on the relevant equipment and scaling. Sorceries generally use a staff; incantations use a sacred seal. A character also needs the appropriate spell equipped and sufficient FP to cast it.
Learn one dependable combat response at a time
A shield can help you study an enemy’s rhythm, but blocking still places demands on stamina. The official guide describes a guard counter: a strong attack made after blocking an attack. It is distinct from a parry, and starting one does not guarantee that the enemy has finished its attack sequence.
Against an unfamiliar opponent, first identify a safe opening. Then choose whether to dodge, block or move out of reach. Trying to force the same long combo into every opening is less useful than learning which attacks leave time to respond.
Upgrade equipment rather than chasing only character levels
Bandai Namco’s five starting tips emphasize weapon and spirit upgrades. Character attributes matter, but a suitable weapon with upgrades can be a better immediate investment than equipping an unfamiliar weapon solely because its name sounds stronger.
Meet the requirements of the equipment you actually use and pay attention to your load. Do not assume that every piece of equipment has the same upgrade system: the early-game smithing advice concerns weapons, not an armor-upgrade service.
Spirit Ashes have conditions
Spirit Ashes require the Spirit Calling Bell and can be used in supported areas near a rebirth monument, indicated by the on-screen monument symbol. They are not available everywhere, and they are not interchangeable with an NPC summon sign or online co-op.
The official starter guide also explains restrictions involving multiplayer. If a summon is unavailable, check the area, your resources and multiplayer state before concluding that the item is broken.
Torrent expands exploration, not immunity to falling
The spectral steed makes travel easier and allows mounted combat, including attacks to either side. Spiritsprings provide special vertical routes. Ordinary cliffs remain dangerous: Torrent’s second jump does not cancel accumulated fall distance.
The fall-damage reference describes special safe areas and lethal boundaries as well as ordinary fall rules. There is no useful universal rule that every landing is safe if you jump again before touching the ground.
You can leave and return better prepared
If an early field enemy is overwhelming, explore elsewhere, collect useful materials and return later. That is a practical use of the open world, not proof that you selected the wrong starting class.
For an opening route with specific stops, see what to do first in Elden Ring. The essential preparation is modest: understand your resources, carry equipment you can use, and treat each difficult encounter as information rather than a demand to repeat the same attempt unchanged.
