The Sinking City 2: How Optional Investigation Fits Its Survival Horror

The Sinking City 2 does not discard investigation. It changes what investigation is for. Frogwares’ official description puts inventory pressure, puzzles and survival in the foreground, while optional cases can provide safer routes, supplies and upgrades. That is a more precise account of the sequel’s direction than saying detective work has disappeared.
The Steam release is listed as August 18, 2026. This article analyses the documented design rather than claiming a personal playthrough or assigning a review score.

Arkham makes movement part of the problem
The sequel is a third-person survival horror game set in 1920s Arkham, a port city affected by a supernatural flood. The official store description names routes travelled on foot and by skiff, shortcuts, a hospital, a fish market and areas beneath the city.
Those details suggest a useful way to think about exploration: a route is not merely the distance between two objectives. It is also a future supply run, a way back to refuge or an alternative to a difficult encounter. Unlocking a shortcut can change the practical value of a place already visited.
Exploration, backtracking, and inventory management belong to the same loop. Remembering a shortcut is useful because it can reduce the distance between a difficult encounter and the supplies needed for another attempt.
Investigation becomes preparation
Frogwares explicitly says optional cases do not gate progress. Completing them can nevertheless change how you approach the next encounter. A case that provides an upgraded gun has a different role from a mandatory clue that must be found before the plot continues.
Curiosity has a survival payoff, but pursuing a lead also asks for attention and a detour. A player who wants to continue the main route can do so without treating every optional mystery as unfinished homework.
It is still too broad to say that all investigation is optional or that every case awards the same kind of item. The official wording concerns optional cases, with several possible advantages rather than a universal reward formula.
Scarcity gives enemies a second kind of importance
The publisher describes the game as resource-lean. It identifies the Slither as creatures that animate the dead and Deep Ones as threats emerging from the water. Some fights call for direct confrontation; others allow retreat, rearming and a better-prepared return.
The implication is not that every enemy can be bypassed or that a cleared room will always become dangerous again. It is that the cost of a fight belongs to the wider route. Spending supplies now can change the next decision, even after the immediate threat is gone.
For a beginner, that makes three habits sensible: inspect the inventory before pushing farther, remember newly opened shortcuts, and consider whether an optional case could solve a problem that brute force has not.
Familiar survival-horror tools, a distinct question
Inventory limits, puzzles and backtracking invite comparison with other survival-horror games. Similar mechanics alone do not demonstrate copying, nor do they establish equivalent quality. The more interesting question is how Frogwares connects those tools to detective work and Arkham’s flooded setting.
If you mainly want uninterrupted combat, the planning and return trips may be a poor fit. If you enjoy using information to improve your chances, the optional investigations are central to the appeal. The official Steam page also lists a demo, offering a more direct way to judge the combat and pacing than a blanket recommendation based on somebody else’s preferences.
